Camera technique, however, is not something that you should be lacking in to start! When I say look for advice on techniques, I mean advanced technique. Before you even consider shooting a wedding you must be very comfortable with all basic technique, from exposure, flash, lighting, posing and getting on with people. Only once you have these basic skills should you seek further advice from more advanced photographers.

Some of the forums on the web are ok for advice, however once again check the amount of experience that the person giving it has, and the style they follow.

Take advice and tips from others but don't ever believe it until you've tried it yourself! Often people give advice and it is not until you have tried it you realise that you either misinterpreted what they said, or their advice was bad in the first place!

So, before trying any new tips at a wedding make sure you practice first until you are comfortable with the tip and perhaps even adapted it a bit to suit your own style of photography.

Now that you have your digital camera and a lens, start shooting. Start taking photos of anything and anybody. The more you shoot the more you learn about your digital camera. The more mistakes you make the better. The idea is to make them now. Ask people you know if they can pose for you. That way you would learn how to properly pose subjects which is important if you want to be a good wedding photographer.

Set up your website. Use it to advertise your wedding photography. Place some of your best work and if you have already taken wedding pictures of friends and family create wedding albums on your website. Try to do at least two free weddings and tell the couple that you are doing this to get experience. Be honest. 5. Use an assistant where possible

This person can be a back up photographer or just someone who knows about photography and who can pass you lenses and equipment and help change memory cards and batteries. You will find an assistant invaluable on the day. When the pressure is on you need that extra pair of hands. Be prepared to pay a reasonable price for their help.

6. Use a second camera

If you are going to be at all successful you need to buy, hire, beg or borrow a second camera. You must have it with a second lens. One camera with a wide angle and the other with a zoom of say 70-200, which is the one I use. It's good quality and takes sharp images. Don't use something cheap. Rather hire your second lens of quality.

7. Shoot in RAW

All DSLRs have a RAW shooting setting. The reason you shoot in RAW is because it covers a multitude of sins. It is more time consuming with post production but it can save your life. There are tricky settings you need to be constantly aware of at weddings especially shooting indoors and outdoors with often a lot of white. In you post-production you'll be able to manipulate your exposure, ISO and other settings with more latitude if you shoot in RAW.

These are my top seven tips. But don't stop here. Try to learn as much as you can about wedding photography. It's a photographic journey in a niche market with so much to learn about. The key of course is to experiment and practise till it comes naturally.

As you may already know, photography comes in various shapes and sizes and each different genre of the art comes with its very own unique challenges as well as its very own benefits and rewards. As you might suspect, wedding photography is of no exception to this rule. Either way, it's always a good idea to ask prior to the event if there is any specific photo('s) that the couple would like taken on the day of the wedding. You can then construct a shot-list depending on the feedback you receive. This shot-list can also contain any photo(s) that you're thinking of taking, ensuring you don't forget in the sheer excitement of the event.

3. Bring More than One Camera: Unfortunately, there is never any guarantee, however consistently reliable it usually is, that your trusty camera isn't going to let you down on the day of the wedding. For this reason, I always bring at least one spare with me.

For shooting the wedding, I always recommend using a wide angle lens' camera for the most part, but also to always bring a longer lensed camera along with you to isolate and truly capture the most intimate of moments between a couple.

4. Be Brave... But Not too Brave: It's true that if you're not assertive as a photographer you will end up missing a lot of extremely good photos on the day and the true mood and atmosphere of the event will not have been captured as well as it could've been. For this reason, don't be timid when it comes to getting into good viewpoints and positions to take the perfect photo. At the same time and just as importantly, NEVER interrupt or obstruct the ceremony in any way. This includes turning off the flash (when possible) and minimizing any noise that your camera may make until the formal part of the event is out of the way.

5. Capture the subtle details: Traditional wedding photographers usually limit themselves to just taking photographs of the couple along with group photos and pictures of the ceremony itself. While this is obviously a very large and necessary part of wedding photography, I think it is ignorant to neglect capturing the more subtle moments of the day.

For example: Taking photos of the rings and subtle facial expressions etc...

Shooting the smaller and more subtle details will help give a certain sense of quality to the end album that most wedding photographers simply couldn't offer.
